Evelyn Morris Hecht, a basically self taught designer and artist, spent 15 years in the New York fashion industry but it was a rescue dog that got her started using her talent as an artist to do dog portraits. You might recall seeing her gorgeous pendant I wrote about previously. Well now I have to share her beautiful artwork.
Top Dog Art benefits a variety of rescue groups with donations of art.
The Labrador Retriever print that I received was beautifully done and a real treasure to own. Each fine art print is a reproduction of an original graphite drawing. The heavyweight matte paper and backing board are acid-free and suitable for framing as is, in a standard 8 1/2 x 11" frame. Comes in a protective clear presentation envelope. Each print is individually titled and signed by the artist.

For the dog lover who loves stylish accessories! Voila the Faithful Friend Handbag - a dog art leather-trimmed handbag, available exclusively from Ardleigh Elliott. The description describes the handbag as "Beautifully crafted and sewn by master artisans, this charming dog lover handbag features a close-up image of the breed of your choice, accented by contrasting brown leather trim and handles."
I was rather miffed that the range does not include my breed of choice - the wire fox terrier - but there are 30 other breeds represented including the Jack Russel Terrier (pictured right). The handbag is durable and secure, and as an added touch contains a breed-specific sculpted metal dog charm.
Such elegance does not come cheap. Each bag is priced at $69.99 each (or three installments of $23.33) plus $9.99 for shipping and handling. Click here for more.
Returning to the topic of dog poop...it is still early enough in 2009 to purchase your "Monthly Doos - the 2009 Dog Poop Calendar." Talk about a unique gift for the not-so-discerning dog lover -- a calendar dedicated to the colorful achievements of man's best friend!!
Each month features beautiful full-color photos of majestic mountains, fields of flowers, rushing rivers and glorious oceanside settings -- but in every shot there's a pile of dog poop. The contrast between the beautiful photography and dog poop is quite remarkable! In some months, the poop is very obvious, in others more discrete and artistic. My favorite is December which has a lovely Christmas wreath with a pile of poop in the center. As an extra bonus, each month features the "hound that made the mound" and important dog poop trivia.
The calendar is now selling on Amazon.com for $13.95, but you can buy it at Stupid.com for half price - $6.50, while stocks last. A truly original gift idea!
Introducting the Hoppy Dawg Tag - A customizable bottle cap ID tag. Inside the tag is a tiny area that can include your dog's I.D. The tag can accommodate most round engraved and license tags, and stops that irritating tag jingle. The back of tag is stamped with the Hoppy Dawg logo and "I.D. Inside" to alert people to that pertinent information in case your best friend is lost. The Hoppy Dawg Tag is made from a non-toxic, FDA approved rubber like material and is anti-microbial.
This is the perfect gift for folks who enjoy their beer and love their dogs. You can also swap out the Hoppy Dawg cap with your favorite bottle cap. The gimic is not cheap - it retails at $8.99 each. Find out more at www.hoppydawg.com
We are only 5 days away from 2009 - and what better way to start a new year than by saving an animal's life!
The Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PhillyPaws) are selling beautiful 2009 calendars featuring shelter dogs and cats for only $15 each. All proceeds go towards the shelter and helping to save the lives of the animals who reside there.
A friend who volunteers for PhillyPaws gave me one of these beautiful calendars as a holiday gift and it was such a special gift because not only is it a beautiful calendar, but knowing that the money my friend spent was going to such a great cause, made me doubly appreciative.
To purchase a calendar, go to http://phillypaws.org/ and scroll down to the bottom left of the page.
I am fortunate that my dear neighbor Bill is a book seller. Tonight he knocked on my door to hand me a beautiful hardcover coffee-table book called, To the Dogs by Peter Culley.
The book features 150 full-page photographs, including 50 in color - images are extremely varied. Some shots include local dog shows, a Moscow circus, a dogfight in Sarajevo, and a dog hotel in Japan. My favorites include, "Alchoholic Living Alone with Dog" - it captures the bond between the bedraggled, old man and his skinny greyhound as they exchange a kiss; and "Wheeler" - Man and dog on rail cart trip from Shelton to Nome, Alaska, 1912.
A description of the book is as follows: "The history of the relationship between canines and humans is more complex than one would think. From Sparta to Stalingrad, the dogs of war, cleanup, guard duty, and companionship have been at our side; their loyalty knows no bounds, whether they are beloved pets or guardians of riot police or unsavory fight fans. From companion to full-fledged member of the tribe, the dog has irrevocably moved into our homes, hearts, and minds to such an extent that the boundaries between “owner” and “pet” have dissolved. The historical and contemporary photographs of To the Dogs explore this human-canine connection in ways that are alternately surprising, endearing, disturbing, and beautiful."
A wonderfully written essay accompanies the photos. Written by poet Peter Culley, "it explores the international citizenry of dogs, and why they can tell us more about ourselves and our culture than we care to admit."
To the Dogs is currently on sale at Amazon.com - reduced from $32.95 to $24.05. A lovely addition to any book collection or the perfect holiday gift.
A little something to help ease the pain of losing a beloved pet
It's not easy when someone you know looses a pet. Let's face it, our furry friends are part of our families and make a lasting imprint on our hearts. We treat them like any other member of the family and when they are taken from us, its devastating.
While kind words and cards are thoughtful they are not long lasting. Memorial coins, however, are. A company called At-Choo.com makes wonderful coins with thoughtful sayings on them that can help ease the pain of losing your friend. Whether you keep one or more of these coins in a special box or you carry them around with you, you will feel a sense of tranquility knowing that while you no longer have your pet, the thought of them will always be with you.
At-Choo.com makes other items as well that can be worn (i.e. jewelry) and other gift ideas that are worth taking a look at. There is something for everyone.
I am all about organization. And I love any product that helps to keep things straight. (Around here, with two kids and two pets, things get a bit hectic!). That's why this Wags and Wiskers pet organizer is perfect for me! For less than $8, you get an adorable and very functional organizer that keeps track of all your pet records.
It is a softcover, 6 3/4 x 8 1/2" book featuring 8 pocket pages to store medical records, licenses, pedigrees, and more. Plus, 8 pages to note feeding and exercise schedules, personality traits, favorite toys, emergency contact information, and more for your pet sitter.
What a great item! (And if you buy 2, they are $6.98 each!) This makes a great gift for a new pet owner, as well.
I have discovered my inner pooch and she is a Beagle. Now you, too, can find your inner canine with Lori Lebda and Tami Bergerson’s book—What Dog Are You?Discovering Your Inner Pooch.
This delightful book takes the reader through three different quizzes:Pooch-Onality, Dapper Dogs and Biscuits or Bones. The quizzes are fun to complete and include such questions as this one from the Pooch-Onality quiz:
You’re twentieth in line at the dog wash.Do you….
Demand to go home.
Sniff the dog in front or behind you.
Casually chat with dogs around you.
Have everyone in line form a new playgroup.
Each response has a point value.Once you complete the quiz, tally up your score and to find your dog breed. After you complete the three quizzes, add all three scores together to obtain your overall dog score and dog breed.
Then you identify which one of the seven dog groups your breed is a member of: Gems, Trend Setters, Feisty Friends, Private Eyes, Guardians, Contenders or The Alphas. Each dog group contains characteristics and features that are prominent of the group. For example, my Beagle is a member of the Private Eyes. The authors characterize Private Eyes as standing out by their, “…constant scanning of the masses and alert manner.” The authors also include celebrities who may be in the different dog groups.
The book is entertaining and fun to read. The dog group descriptions are quite detailed.I always thought of myself as more of a bigger, fuzzier dog, such as St. Bernard or Golden Retriever. But after reading this book, I will embrace my inner Beagle and let her howl!
This book will make a great gift for dog lovers everywhere. And coming soon for cat lovers, What Cat Are You? Discovering Your Inner Feline, which will be available in early 2009.
The authors have generously provided six FREE copies of their book for six lucky Swanky Pup readers! Swanky Pup will randomly select six readers on September 24, 2008. To be entered in the drawing, simply sign up to receive our Swanky Pup Newsletter! Readers who already receive the Newsletter will automatically be entered into the drawing for to win one of the six books. Sign up by September 23, 2008 to be entered into the random drawing.
Ever wonder what your pet is really thinking about? If they could talk, what would your dog or cat tell you? Maybe they would say, "I'm hungry." Or, maybe they aren't feeling well and they would want to tell you to take them to the vet. I know for myself, I would love for my dog to speak to me. Then I could understand why he does what he does to try to get my attention.
On a website called Angelica's Cards, you can find where to buy a deck of cards that you use as if you were using a deck of tarot cards. Here's how it works. The deck of 55 beautiful cards were made by Angelica del Mar. You simply ask the deck of cards a question or a statement pertaining to your pet. An example might be "How are you feeling today?" You then shuffle the cards until your instinct tells you to stop. Just from then lifting up the top two cards of the deck that was just shuffled, you'll find the answer to your question using your own intuition.
So, the next time your dog is not acting like him or herself, grab these cards and you just might find out what is bothering them.

Labor Day weekend is quickly approaching. For many people, this holiday signifies a last drive to and from the shore or the mountains; a final farewell to bathing suits, shorts and t-shirts; and last hurrahs with family and friends. For me, it means back to teaching, getting my daughter back on a routine of waking up early in the mornings and spending a little less time hanging around my puppy. Yes, he and I will be sad to loose those long afternoon walks together in the warm sunshine. But alas, there is always next summer.
Labor Day weekend also means good sales at your local malls for some fall wardrobe shopping. Why not find something great to wear and remember all the fun times you had with your pooch during the summer. I have just the place to do that.
A company called Dancing Dog Design makes belts and coats that come with embroidered dogs on them. You simply click on the breed of dog that you want on your belt or jacket and voila. The belts are 1 3/4 inches wide and come on a variety of ribbon colors. There are only 12 breeds of dogs available.
The coats are canvas and also come with a breed of dog "dancing" all over it. The coats are fully lined and have corduroy cuffs and collar. It has front pockets and a very important pocket for your cell phone. This coat would make a great transitional coat from fall to winter. A must have!
I have to tell you that I have worn my dachshund belt many times this summer. I have gotten so many compliments on it and it looks good with anything. Who know... maybe I'll be sporting the Dachshund coat this fall. Hmmm.... I think it's time to go shopping! Happy Labor Day!
Oh, I almost forgot. Dancing Dog Design is offering free ground shipping when you enter the code SWANKY.
A well-groomed dog is a handsome dog.And having a shorter fur coat during these hot, humid days of summer will help your pooch keep his cool.
Last summer, Jax enjoyed the services of a professional groomer. While he looked awesome, this “extra” set us back so much that we added a line item (Jax's Grooming) to our monthly budget. In May, I mentioned in passing to my husband that we should consider grooming Jax this summer to save money.
The Andis Clipper set is awesome. The instructions are easy to understand and the clipper is surprisingly simple to use.The set costs $69.51 on Amazon.I have already saved money (and gas!) by bathing and grooming Jax myself this summer.
One admission. While I am able to give Jax a decent cut, I am by no means able to do it as well as the professional groomers. But I’m ok with this, because the grooming session is also a nice bonding time for Jax and me.
The Andis set comes in a hard case that is great for storage and travel and it includes four snap-on comb attachments in sizes 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" to vary the length of the cut and clipper oil.
The Dog Grooming for Dummies has wonderful tips such as essential grooming supplies, foods/supplements that enhance your dog’s coat (a cooked egg daily!) and an entire chapter on training your dog for grooming. The book and clipper set has given me a new hobby and saved us money!
Forgive my opinion, but I have always viewed doggy-dress-up as overly posh and sissified. Sure, for the thin-coated dog, winter coats are necessary, but pink ruffles and sequined bow ties? Sorry, my girls are dogs, not dolls.
But with the MLB playoffs right around the corner, I may be able to make an exception.
It isn't too posh or the least bit sissified to support your favorite baseball team with the officially licensed MLB dog jerseys.
There are no rhinestones involved. These casual canine clothes are made from 100% micro-mesh polyester, and feature your favorite team's logo and official patch (notice the Phillies are
representing here). And MLB jerseys come in sizes
that accommodate all of our four-legged fans from the Bull Mastiff to the Teacup Poodle (see chart below).
small = length 12-16 girth 12-16 neck 6-10"
medium = length 16-20" girth 16-19" neck 10-14"
large = length 20-26" girth 19-26" neck 14-18
XL = length 26-30" girth 26 to 32" neck 18 to 22"
Let's not forget that football season is well on its way. Officially licensed NFL dogwear is also available, not to mention basketball, hockey, and of course, NASCAR. Note that I was unable to find a site that offered all leagues and teams, so here are a few links to aid you in your search for spirited, yet practical dog apparel.
I love finding unique, innovative dog shops where I can shop for Jax and find gifts for my fellow dog lovers.I have found such a store in Barker and Ball—a one-stop couture shop that carries all kinds of luxury goods including beds, treats, toys and gifts. This UK based store offers luxurious, unique items for you and your pooch. They have a wide assortment of gifts that include designer dog mugs with a pop-art photo of different dog breeds and dog-themed key chains.
The store also has some cool toys.My favorite toy is the Soft Bone Dog Toy.This handmade toy is made of 100% cotton and comes in a blue, green and orange. The toys also come in two sizes-small and large (10 inches and 13 inches respectively).
This bone is filled with hypo-allergenic polyester fiber and a squeaker, to further entice your dog to play. Now you may be asking what is so special about a handmade, cotton dog toy. Well this one is filled with lavender! The scent is delightful—subtle, yet refreshing.I love lavender, but I wondered if Jax would take to this soothing scent. After a few deep sniffs and nudging the bone around, Jax joyfully picked up his new toy and brought it to his bed—a sure sign of satisfaction.
Check out the soft bone dog toy at Barker and Ball and save 10% on all purchases with the coupon code SWANKYPUP! For the non-UK shoppers, the site conveniently converts the £ to $, with the “choose currency” feature at the bottom of the website.
Where I live in Philadelphia there is a law regarding all pets: they must be registered and licensed. This entails filling out a form and paying a fee in return for another form to prove that, yes, your dog is legal (yawn). The folks at YappyHappy.com came up with a resourceful and fun interpretation of pet permits. At this site you can order a unique kind of dog tag that is, in fact, a license.
These tags are charming and highly functional. They provide your pet with a lot more information than the traditional metal ID tags, which usually only offer a name and phone number. These miniature “barking” licenses give all the facts—breed, first and last name, address and phone number, height and weight, and of course, like any other form of identification, your dog’s picture. And, because these tags are made of durable plastic, they don’t clang against the metal fixtures on your canine’s collar. This then eliminates that annoying noise that accompanies your pet’s every step, a noise that is most likely even more bothersome to the collar-wearer whose hearing tends to be super-sonic.
But unique and original dog tags are not the only items Yappyhappy.com has to offer. Following the layout of your state's driver's license are also water-resistant pet mats. These are perfect to place under your dog's food or water bowl, as they make clean-up easy while adding a sense of humor to your kitchen floor.
Yappyhappy.com can also create personalized tote bags, magnets, key chains and luggage tags.
Also, check out http://yappyhappy.etsy.com/ for other unique ideas like custom dog collages, hand-made bird houses, and, my personal favorite, the Fairy Dog Bottle-Cap necklace.
These pieces are one-of-a-kind, and you have the freedom to choose your favorite colors and backgrounds. A great gift idea.
To order a Yappy Happy barking license, pet mat, tote bag etc. you’ll need to upload the most flattering head-on mug shot of your dog. Select the state you reside in (all are available), fill out all the pertinent information and send it. Your new dog license will arrive in the mail in a few days.
Check out my Pearl sporting her Yappy Happy license.
Our weekly trips to the shore are great. We kinda have it down to a science now. We pack, we load the car, load the kids and we are off.
Of course, it's very important to make sure that all our bags have our ID information on them. There is a great website called Pet Luggage Tag (www.petluggagetag.com). This company makes fabulous tags to put on any bag. What I like best about them is that they are big and very noticeable, especially if it has your dog on it. If you do a lot of traveling, that involves waiting at the baggage carousel and wondering if you are ever going to find your bag among all the other black suitcases, then this tag is a must have. You will surely know which bag is yours and I know that when other people see your tag, comments will be made by lots of other travelers.
The Pet Luggage Tag are large, like I said, measuring 2.63 X 3.88 inches. For a comparison, a credit card is significantly smaller. The tag is made in a color that you choose. The front of the tag has a picture of your pet that you provide, and the back of the tag has any personal information you want on it. The tags are very strong. Since they are printed on plastic, there is no need to worry that the printing on the tag is going to rub off, fade or peel.
This tag is a must have! Don't think that you need to use it just for luggage. School will be back in session before we know it. Why not give your kids a tag for their schoolbags with their best friend on it? It's a great gift and something you'll have for a long time.
Order from Pet Luggage Tag and receive a 10% discount and free shipping when you enter Swanky Pup in the coupon code section.
Decision making has never been my strength. Just ask my husband, who patiently waits while I hem and haw over whether to order the Veggie Burger or Veggie Chili. So you can imagine how long the decision making process took when we decided to adopt a dog.
I like to do the research before making any life-altering decisions. So when we agreed to add a dog to our family, I had a mission.
In my quest for information, my dad recommended Cesar’s Way: The Natural Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems by a dog expert named Cesar Milan. Little did I know that Cesar is a nationally recognized dog expert. I loved this book. It helped me understand that humanizing a dog actually harms the dog. I learned that dogs need rules, boundaries and limitations and that invoking these principles helps the dog become balanced. A balanced dog is a happy dog.
Cesar also asserts that dogs need exercise, discipline and affection [in that order] to be balanced.Key to Cesar’s approach is projecting a calm-assertive energy when interacting with your dog. Cesar defines a calm-assertive leader as relaxed, but confident. Cesar’s book really helped me prepare to be a pack leader and consequently Jax is a balanced, happy dog! I highly recommend this book to all dog parents. Get Cesar’s Way at Amazon.com for $11.16.
Ceramic Feeding Bowls and Treat Jars for Your Pets
I think it is so nice when I go into another pet owners home and see fun and whimsical things for their pets. It could be a pet themed picture frame or a cool piece of art having something to do with the family pet.
Why not show your love and admiration for your family pet with a beautiful piece of pottery that is also functional. At Petware Pottery (www.petwarepottery.com) you can find all kinds of bowls and treat jars for your favorite dog or cat. They come in all sizes and colors. Petware Pottery designs their products with fun dots or stripes, and in the middle of the bowls, you can find either a bone or a picture of a dog or cat.
What I like most about these bowls and treat jars are that they are made with lead free glazes and slips. In addition, they can be placed into the dishwasher and are microwave safe (in case your dog is like mine, and prefers his food heated up).
If you are a pet store owner and would like to purchase some of these bowls, the company is offering you a 10% discount on your order. For everyone else, please go to the Petware Pottery website to see a listing of where you can find and purchase these terrific bowls and treat jars yourself.
Beautiful jewelry that shows off the ones you love
It's all the fashion now to wear pretty necklaces that have your children's names and their birthdates on them. They come in all different shapes and sizes and they are made of different precious metals. They are very pretty.
I got one better though. There is a company online called Forbidden Fruit Jewelry (www.forbiddenfruitjewelry.com) and they make beautiful custom pieces of wearable art. Each piece features a photograph of that special someone you would like to keep near and dear to your heart. The necklaces include a sterling silver chain or leather necklace, Swarovski crystals, your choice of either a black or white pendant, and you get to choose the shape of the pendant, all of which you customize to your liking. The photograph is baked into a polymer clay and sealed. Each pendant is fade and water resistant, so there is no worrying that after a few wearings, it's going to look different or come apart.
To make your piece even more personal, you're able to have an eight word message written on the back of the pendant (excluding the mini pendants). Maybe you'd like the name or names of the people (or furry friend) on the back. Whatever you decide to have, I know you'll treasure your piece of jewelry for years to come.
I have to tell you, that I have a necklace and a pair of earrings from Forbidden Fruit Jewelry with a picture of my daughter (who was 7 months old at the time) and my dog, both wearing Eagles football jerseys. I can't tell you how many compliments I have gotten. Strangers have seen me wear the necklace and have made comments on how pretty it is. For me, it's just something special I have with my 2 kids on it.
Forbidden Fruit Jewelry is great for you or as a gift for someone. Enter in the coupon code "swanky", and receive 10% off your order.
Yes, it's summer and we all do a lot of traveling. Maybe you are going on a plane or just jumping in the car for a quick trip to the shore. Wherever you are headed, make sure your luggage, and your dog, are clearly labeled with a cool tag from Shaggytag.com.
Shaggytag.com makes all kinds of tags for your dog. If you are doing some traveling, you may want to look into a luggage tag for your dog's luggage or your own. If your refrigerator looks similar to mine, all cluttered with papers and drawings from my daughter, you may benefit from getting a magnet. Or maybe you're looking for a great gift for someone... why not a mouse pad with their favorite furry friend on it? Shaggytag.com has got you covered, whatever your needs maybe.
Each tag is custom made, very durable, color printed on both sides and laminated with heavy duty plastic, for protection from everyday wear and tear. It resembles a drivers license, in that it has a picture of your dog and all of his or her personal information. The tags are made for all kinds of animals.
Our dogs are very important to us and you want to provide the very best for them. Give them something that is useful, informative, looks nice and will, for sure, make heads turn. I love trendy gift stores. I recently came across a great one and you don't even need to get out of your chair to go to it. The store is called Tatutina.com and the gifts that are sold there are fantastic.
What I especially love about the Tatutina.com website is that they sell all kinds of gifts for everyone in your family, including your pets. I have the picture frame and dog food bowl that are shown here. People love the frame, and not just because my dog and daughter are in it, but because it's so nice to look at. All the products are fun, colorful, eye catching and will, for sure brighten anyone's day.
The gifts at Tatutina.com are all hand painted by a mother-daughter team, who wanted to create functional and fun products. The paint used is all certified non-toxic and lead free.
So, if you are in need of a gift for anyone in your family from your kids to your pets, I highly recommend checking out the great products at Tatutina.com.
I discovered Feel Good Frames last year when writing for another blog on baby and kids products. They sent me a sample of their personalized, hand-made picture frames and ornaments and I was so impressed with the design, quality, and uniqueness of these products.
Recently the company announced that they are coming out with a new line of ornaments and frames for dog-lovers like us! The ornaments are designed with bold dots, stripes & swirls in apple green, holiday red, pink & blue. Choose from “Posh Pooch,” “Spoiled Rotten,” “Where’s My Tiara?,” and “World’s Best Dog.” The year “2008” is painted on the back of the ornament.
Feel Good Frames’ products can also be personalized with the pet’s name and the year. The frames hold a 3”x3” photo and hang from a fluffy ribbon. Feel Good Frames’ ornaments retail for $26.00 and make a great gift.

I love my book and those who come to visit always pick it up and look through it. It has all my favorite pictures of my dog in it and I know that I will treasure it for a long time to come.
For years one of my favorite places online for great gifts has been Red Envelope. Their items are well-made, classy, and unique.
They recently introduced a new pet collection which, like all of their other items, is filled with unique, beautiful, and classic items for you and your pet.
