Memorializing Your Pet

Heaven to Home is a company that creates collections of home fragrance and gift items. The company also started a new chapter called Angels for Animals during the Hurricane Katrina disaster that left so many animals in dire straits. The company founders share a lifelong passion for animals, and Angels for Animals products allow them to donate a portion of proceeds to animal welfare.
Among their very lovely list of products is their Animal Memorial Candle (pictured top right). The candle is fragranced with essential oils of lavender and sage selected for their calming and healing qualities. The jar has silk screened artwork consisting their logo and the following moving quote: "Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
The candle sells for $15 and can be purchased here.

Monthly Doos Poop Calendar

Returning to the topic of dog poop...it is still early enough in 2009 to purchase your "Monthly Doos - the 2009 Dog Poop Calendar." Talk about a unique gift for the not-so-discerning dog lover -- a calendar dedicated to the colorful achievements of man's best friend!!
Each month features beautiful full-color photos of majestic mountains, fields of flowers, rushing rivers and glorious oceanside settings -- but in every shot there's a pile of dog poop. The contrast between the beautiful photography and dog poop is quite remarkable! In some months, the poop is very obvious, in others more discrete and artistic. My favorite is December which has a lovely Christmas wreath with a pile of poop in the center. As an extra bonus, each month features the "hound that made the mound" and important dog poop trivia.
The calendar is now selling on Amazon.com for $13.95, but you can buy it at Stupid.com for half price - $6.50, while stocks last. A truly original gift idea!

Did you ever wonder what your dog does all day? (and a GIVEAWAY!)

I often wondered what my dog did all day while I wasn't home. Did she just sleep on the couch? Did she go after my cat? Did she walk around aimlessly? Did she eat the cat's poop?! Well, recently, thanks to the help of a cool like pet's digital camera, I got to find out!

Uncle Milton's Pet's Eye View Camera is a neat, compact and lightweight item that clips onto your dog (or cat's) collar and captures what your pet sees throughout the day. It's built-in timer automatically snaps pictures every 1, 5, or 15 minutes (whatever you choose). The internal memory card stores over 40 pictures (and 640x480 resolution so you can print 4x6 photos).

This fun (yet practical) product is a lot like a "nanny cam" for your dog. My dog Maggie mostly slept during the day when I looked at her pictures, but I also saw her looking out the window (probably barking at somebody) and trying to get some of my cat's food (bad dog!).

Want a chance to try one of these fun camera's out with your pet? We have five to give away to some lucky newsletter subscribers! Simply sign up for our newsletter between now and Valentines Day and you will be entered to win. Already signed up? You will automatically be entered to win!

Give Your Dog a Massage!

The health benefits of massage are undeniable—increased relaxation, flexibility, and an overall feeling of well-being. Now, your dog can also enjoy these benefits with the Pooch Massoose! This bone-shaped massager (with pawprint nubs!) was designed and developed by Certified Veterinary Chiropractitioner, Dr. Allan Wattenmaker. Dr. Wattenmaker created the Pooch Massoose when his clients asked for a simple, effective way to provide relief and relaxation to their dogs at home.

The Pooch Massoose is easy to use—simply hold it on your dog’s back, hips or shoulders using all 4 ‘paws’, apply gentle pressure and rotate it in circular motions. Signs of bliss that you may see include glazy eyes, licking, or complete, utter surrender!

Jax was the lucky recipient of a blue Pooch Massoose and he has been enjoying the benefits for several weeks. He looks forward to his nightly massage and readily comes when I pick up the “blue bone.”

Healthy Little Bites

I was a bit cynical when I brought home Olive Organic Little Berry Bites treats for Axel. My dog has a penchant for singling out healthy snacks and rejecting them. He is a Milkbones, Pupperoni type of guy. We still buy Milkbones but I've been trying to go healthy for a while.

Little Berry Bites are manufactured by Olive. They are made of 100% natural ingredients like organic rolled oats, organic cranberries and blueberries, unsweetend applesauce, raw honey, and organic ground cinnamon and cloves. Wheat, corn and soy free. No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives of any kind. The range comes in three additional flavors - Nutty 'Nanners, My Oh My Pizza Pie, and Happy Apple Snacks.

I can only tell you that Axel LOVED these snacks. He gobbled them up like they were fries from McDonalds. Each 8 oz package retails for approximately $7.95. Olive also sells an Organic Cookie Treat Gift Set which includes all four popular Olive organic dog snacks neatly tucked in an organic cotton cinchpack for $29.99.

Photographic Tribute "To the Dogs"

I am fortunate that my dear neighbor Bill is a book seller. Tonight he knocked on my door to hand me a beautiful hardcover coffee-table book called, To the Dogs by Peter Culley.

The book features 150 full-page photographs, including 50 in color - images are extremely varied. Some shots include local dog shows, a Moscow circus, a dogfight in Sarajevo, and a dog hotel in Japan. My favorites include, "Alchoholic Living Alone with Dog" - it captures the bond between the bedraggled, old man and his skinny greyhound as they exchange a kiss; and "Wheeler" - Man and dog on rail cart trip from Shelton to Nome, Alaska, 1912.

A description of the book is as follows: "The history of the relationship between canines and humans is more complex than one would think. From Sparta to Stalingrad, the dogs of war, cleanup, guard duty, and companionship have been at our side; their loyalty knows no bounds, whether they are beloved pets or guardians of riot police or unsavory fight fans.
From companion to full-fledged member of the tribe, the dog has irrevocably moved into our homes, hearts, and minds to such an extent that the boundaries between “owner” and “pet” have dissolved. The historical and contemporary photographs of To the Dogs explore this human-canine connection in ways that are alternately surprising, endearing, disturbing, and beautiful."

A wonderfully written essay accompanies the photos. Written by poet Peter Culley, "it explores the international citizenry of dogs, and why they can tell us more about ourselves and our culture than we care to admit."

To the Dogs is currently on sale at Amazon.com - reduced from $32.95 to $24.05. A lovely addition to any book collection or the perfect holiday gift.

Beautiful, Custom Made Dog Collars and Leashes!

I admit—Jax is one pampered pooch—nothing but the best for our little fur ball. He has an awesome bed, good food and lots of toys to keep him mentally and physically engaged. Despite this, I have, admittedly, overlooked Jax’s neck attire. For the last 16 months, he has been wearing a durable, nylon green Martingale collar. Functionally, this collar works—I’m a big fan of the Martingale, a specialized dog collar that helps prevent a dog from slipping out of his collar. Fashionably, this nylon green collar is plain, old and dull.

Luckily, Jax no longer sports this boring old nylon collar of yesteryear because I found The ModDog—a retailer specializing in hand-made, custom designed collars, leashes and key fobs! Kyra, the founder and designer, created The ModDog after trying to find cute, stylish Martingale Collars for her Weimaraner puppy, Noodles. Kyra creates fashionable collars that will make your four-legged friend the hippest dog in the neighborhood!

The collars and leashes are all hand made and come in a variety of fun, bright designs such as Serendipity—an olive green and aqua swirl design; Pink Hot Cocoa—brown with pink dots; and
Wonder Dotsbright circles in primary colors on a white background.

As an added bonus, all of the collars are triple stitched at stress points to prevent breaking and prolong durability. And the collars are priced well—starting at $17 for a customized, handmade collar!

Jax is now sporting the Mojito collar, and he is the most handsome dog on the block with his swanky new collar. Jax and I highly recommend The ModDog’s custom designed collars and leashes. Jax is definitely the leader of the fashion pack with his new collar! Check out all of The ModDog’s fashion forward designs today.

Kyra welcomes questions about her products and she can be reached at kyra@themoddog.com or 770.310.9821.

Hail to the Chief

Election fever is in the air. With the Democratic National Convention wrapping up last week and the Republican National Convention gearing up this week, the political season is well underway with each party seeking to find unique ways to promote their candidate.

From bumper stickers to campaign buttons, there are multiple methods to show your support. And now your pooch can join in the fun of proclaiming his support for president.

The Dog Coat Lady creates political themed buttons so your four-legged friend can show his presidential spirit. In addition, The Dog Coat Lady makes buttons to spread positive messages on issues such as animal rights. All of these buttons can also be made into magnets or key chains, upon request.

Whether your Afghan Hound supports McCain or your Golden Retriever supports Obama, these buttons are a unique way for you and your canine companion to spread your message. Priced starting at only $1.00, these buttons make great gifts for the political, dog-lover. The campaign buttons are available in a variety of dog breeds including Poodles, Mutts, Dachshunds, Chows, Labs and even Iguanas!

Time for a Haircut

A well-groomed dog is a handsome dog. And having a shorter fur coat during these hot, humid days of summer will help your pooch keep his cool.

Last summer, Jax enjoyed the services of a professional groomer. While he looked awesome, this “extra” set us back so much that we added a line item (Jax's Grooming) to our monthly budget. In May, I mentioned in passing to my husband that we should consider grooming Jax this summer to save money.

Ask, and ye shall receive.

A week later, I received a large box from Amazon in which, I found my very own Andis 21420 Pro Pet 7 Piece Clipper Set and a Dog Grooming for Dummies book!

The Andis Clipper set is awesome. The instructions are easy to understand and the clipper is surprisingly simple to use. The set costs $69.51 on Amazon. I have already saved money (and gas!) by bathing and grooming Jax myself this summer.

One admission. While I am able to give Jax a decent cut, I am by no means able to do it as well as the professional groomers. But I’m ok with this, because the grooming session is also a nice bonding time for Jax and me.

The Andis set comes in a hard case that is great for storage and travel and it includes four snap-on comb attachments in sizes 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" to vary the length of the cut and clipper oil.

The Dog Grooming for Dummies has wonderful tips such as essential grooming supplies, foods/supplements that enhance your dog’s coat (a cooked egg daily!) and an entire chapter on training your dog for grooming. The book and clipper set has given me a new hobby and saved us money!

for the MVP (most valueable pet)

Forgive my opinion, but I have always viewed doggy-dress-up as overly posh and sissified. Sure, for the thin-coated dog, winter coats are necessary, but pink ruffles and sequined bow ties? Sorry, my girls are dogs, not dolls.

But with the MLB playoffs right around the corner, I may be able to make an exception.

It isn't too posh or the least bit sissified to support your favorite baseball team with the officially licensed MLB dog jerseys.

There are no rhinestones involved. These casual canine clothes are made from 100% micro-mesh polyester, and feature your favorite team's logo and official patch (notice the Phillies are
representing here). And MLB jerseys come in sizes
that accommodate all of our four-legged fans from the Bull Mastiff to the Teacup Poodle (see chart below).
small = length 12-16 girth 12-16 neck 6-10"
medium = length 16-20" girth 16-19" neck 10-14"
large = length 20-26" girth 19-26" neck 14-18
XL = length 26-30" girth 26 to 32" neck 18 to 22"

Let's not forget that football season is well on its way. Officially licensed NFL dogwear is also available, not to mention basketball, hockey, and of course, NASCAR. Note that I was unable to find a site that offered all leagues and teams, so here are a few links to aid you in your search for spirited, yet practical dog apparel.

Licensed to Yap

Where I live in Philadelphia there is a law regarding all pets: they must be registered and licensed. This entails filling out a form and paying a fee in return for another form to prove that, yes, your dog is legal (yawn). The folks at YappyHappy.com came up with a resourceful and fun interpretation of pet permits. At this site you can order a unique kind of dog tag that is, in fact, a license.

These tags are charming and highly functional. They provide your pet with a lot more information than the traditional metal ID tags, which usually only offer a name and phone number. These miniature “barking” licenses give all the facts—breed, first and last name, address and phone number, height and weight, and of course, like any other form of identification, your dog’s picture. And, because these tags are made of durable plastic, they don’t clang against the metal fixtures on your canine’s collar. This then eliminates that annoying noise that accompanies your pet’s every step, a noise that is most likely even more bothersome to the collar-wearer whose hearing tends to be super-sonic.

But unique and original dog tags are not the only items Yappyhappy.com has to offer. Following the layout of your state's driver's license are also water-resistant pet mats. These are perfect to place under your dog's food or water bowl, as they make clean-up easy while adding a sense of humor to your kitchen floor.
Yappyhappy.com can also create personalized tote bags, magnets, key chains and luggage tags.

Also, check out http://yappyhappy.etsy.com/ for other unique ideas like custom dog collages, hand-made bird houses, and, my personal favorite, the Fairy Dog Bottle-Cap necklace.

These pieces are one-of-a-kind, and you have the freedom to choose your favorite colors and backgrounds. A great gift idea.

To order a Yappy Happy barking license, pet mat, tote bag etc. you’ll need to upload the most flattering head-on mug shot of your dog. Select the state you reside in (all are available), fill out all the pertinent information and send it. Your new dog license will arrive in the mail in a few days.

Check out my Pearl sporting her Yappy Happy license.

Having trouble finding your bag?

Our weekly trips to the shore are great. We kinda have it down to a science now. We pack, we load the car, load the kids and we are off.

Of course, it's very important to make sure that all our bags have our ID information on them. There is a great website called Pet Luggage Tag (www.petluggagetag.com). This company makes fabulous tags to put on any bag. What I like best about them is that they are big and very noticeable, especially if it has your dog on it. If you do a lot of traveling, that involves waiting at the baggage carousel and wondering if you are ever going to find your bag among all the other black suitcases, then this tag is a must have. You will surely know which bag is yours and I know that when other people see your tag, comments will be made by lots of other travelers.

The Pet Luggage Tag are large, like I said, measuring 2.63 X 3.88 inches. For a comparison, a credit card is significantly smaller. The tag is made in a color that you choose. The front of the tag has a picture of your pet that you provide, and the back of the tag has any personal information you want on it. The tags are very strong. Since they are printed on plastic, there is no need to worry that the printing on the tag is going to rub off, fade or peel.

This tag is a must have! Don't think that you need to use it just for luggage. School will be back in session before we know it. Why not give your kids a tag for their schoolbags with their best friend on it? It's a great gift and something you'll have for a long time.

Order from Pet Luggage Tag and receive a 10% discount and free shipping when you enter Swanky Pup in the coupon code section.

Ceramic Feeding Bowls and Treat Jars for Your Pets

I think it is so nice when I go into another pet owners home and see fun and whimsical things for their pets. It could be a pet themed picture frame or a cool piece of art having something to do with the family pet.

Why not show your love and admiration for your family pet with a beautiful piece of pottery that is also functional. At Petware Pottery (www.petwarepottery.com) you can find all kinds of bowls and treat jars for your favorite dog or cat. They come in all sizes and colors. Petware Pottery designs their products with fun dots or stripes, and in the middle of the bowls, you can find either a bone or a picture of a dog or cat.

What I like most about these bowls and treat jars are that they are made with lead free glazes and slips. In addition, they can be placed into the dishwasher and are microwave safe (in case your dog is like mine, and prefers his food heated up).

If you are a pet store owner and would like to purchase some of these bowls, the company is offering you a 10% discount on your order. For everyone else, please go to the Petware Pottery website to see a listing of where you can find and purchase these terrific bowls and treat jars yourself.

Brainteaser for your Pooch

Turn treating your dog into a stimulating game! The Dog Brick is an inventive puzzle from Nina Ottosson’s line of dog toys that will give your dog hours of fun, interactive play. The Dog Brick is a rectangular toy with eight treat holes. Each hole has a sliding 'door' to cover over the treat to hide it. Your dog’s job is to either learn to slide the 'doors' towards themselves or slide them away with their paw or nose in order to get to the treat.

Once your dog masters the game, you can also up the ante by adding smart blocks which lock the bricks in place. Your dog now has to remove the smart blocks before they can move the bricks to get to the yummy treat.

To see how the Dog Brick works, click on the YouTube movie above.

The Dog Brick is heavy and durable, made of a tough wood that is practically indestructible. Manufactured in the United Kingdom, the product is distributed in the USA by Paw Lickers Bakery and Boutique. It is not cheap at approximately $45, but if you want to give that special dog in your life a unique gift that will get his brain ticking and his tail wagging, you can’t do better than the Dog Brick.

Beautiful jewelry that shows off the ones you love

It's all the fashion now to wear pretty necklaces that have your children's names and their birthdates on them. They come in all different shapes and sizes and they are made of different precious metals. They are very pretty.

I got one better though. There is a company online called Forbidden Fruit Jewelry (www.forbiddenfruitjewelry.com) and they make beautiful custom pieces of wearable art. Each piece features a photograph of that special someone you would like to keep near and dear to your heart. The necklaces include a sterling silver chain or leather necklace, Swarovski crystals, your choice of either a black or white pendant, and you get to choose the shape of the pendant, all of which you customize to your liking. The photograph is baked into a polymer clay and sealed. Each pendant is fade and water resistant, so there is no worrying that after a few wearings, it's going to look different or come apart.

To make your piece even more personal, you're able to have an eight word message written on the back of the pendant (excluding the mini pendants). Maybe you'd like the name or names of the people (or furry friend) on the back. Whatever you decide to have, I know you'll treasure your piece of jewelry for years to come.

I have to tell you, that I have a necklace and a pair of earrings from Forbidden Fruit Jewelry with a picture of my daughter (who was 7 months old at the time) and my dog, both wearing Eagles football jerseys. I can't tell you how many compliments I have gotten. Strangers have seen me wear the necklace and have made comments on how pretty it is. For me, it's just something special I have with my 2 kids on it.

Forbidden Fruit Jewelry is great for you or as a gift for someone. Enter in the coupon code "swanky", and receive 10% off your order.

Great gifts for your pooch and for you!

I love trendy gift stores. I recently came across a great one and you don't even need to get out of your chair to go to it. The store is called Tatutina.com and the gifts that are sold there are fantastic.

What I especially love about the Tatutina.com website is that they sell all kinds of gifts for everyone in your family, including your pets. I have the picture frame and dog food bowl that are shown here. People love the frame, and not just because my dog and daughter are in it, but because it's so nice to look at. All the products are fun, colorful, eye catching and will, for sure brighten anyone's day.

The gifts at Tatutina.com are all hand painted by a mother-daughter team, who wanted to create functional and fun products. The paint used is all certified non-toxic and lead free.

So, if you are in need of a gift for anyone in your family from your kids to your pets, I highly recommend checking out the great products at Tatutina.com.

Go Fetch!

So, you take your favorite furry friend to the dog park and you realize you forgot to bring along a ball to play fetch with. I do it all the time and I feel horrible that my buddy has nothing to play with. Ok, to be honest, he doesn't have a clue. He loves playing with the other dogs anyway.

But, now he can be really upset with me when I forget the ultimate in ball fetching. I recently got the Chuckit Ball Launcher from Canine Hardware. Not only does my dog get a great workout from running after the ball, but my arm doesn't hurt after throwing it 40 or 50 times. With practice, you can consistently throw the ball 100 to 140 feet.

The Chuckit Ball Launcher comes in blue, orange, purple and red. It is designed to provide you with hands free pickup. There is nothing worse than having to pick up a drippy, slimy ball. The Chuckit Ball Launcher uses a standard tennis ball. For our smaller swanky pups, Canine Hardware also makes a Ball Launcher for smaller dogs as well.

It is important to remind you that you should only play with Chuckit Ball Launcher in an area that is large. It's ideal for the beach, the park or a large backyard. Please be sure that you are not near any buildings, or windows. (Broken glass is not fun!)

The Chuckit Ball Launcher from Canine Hardware can be purchased at various pet supply stores worldwide. Your dog will for sure love this toy!

Transform your furry friend's face into an amazing work of art!

I am absolutely blown away at the gorgeous, incredible, amazing (am I using enough adjectives?) portrait of my dog Maggie. This work of art was lovingly created by artist Janet Burt, who recently launched her website, Rainbowdog Pet Portraits.

These vibrant and colorful, contemporary, acrylic portraits are hand-painted by Janet, using a photo that you supply to her (either via email or by mail). The photo doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to well-lit, in-focus, and showing your dog's markings and coloring. I supplied a few photos to Janet, she recommended one, and then sent me a few variations of it cropped before she created the piece of art. (You can see the photo below that we selected for the portrait) And if you want a portrait of two animals, they don't need to be in the same shot for Janet to make an amazing creation.

Each portrait is painted on a 11/16 inch, back-stapled canvas with a staple-free, painted edge. They are beautiful as-is, or can be framed. Janet can create them in a variation of sizes in both square and rectangular canvases.

As beautiful as the picture is above, it doesn't do the real portrait justice. This work of art will be displayed in my home and enjoyed by my family and friends for many years to come. Cherish your pet by creating a work of art in their honor (or memory). Or gift one to someone special. They will be beyond thrilled with this amazing creation.

To learn more about Rainbowdog, check out the gallery of art that Janet has created, the FAQ page to learn more about the process and the photo tips page on how to best take your photo. If you place an order, make sure you mention to Janet that you heard of her through The Swanky Pup and receive a 10% discount on your portrait!
